Cinerino Marziano Abbona 2021

Cinerino by Marziano Abbona is an unusual example of Viognier made in purity in Piedmont, in the heart of Langhe: the origin of the variety, in fact, are located in the North of Rhone, in France, where the vinification is usually made in blend with other local grape varietes, but in the last years an increasing attention for Viognier accelerated its settling, with a reasonable success, also in nations like North-America, Australia and South-Africa. Marziano Abbona planted his first rows of Viognier in 1991, trusting the capability of the grape to adapt itself to the continental climate of this production area, with distinctive temperature changes between day and night very similar to the French ones. This optimal climate is strenghtened by the altitude of 400 meters above the sea level and by the West exposure: some features that increase the aromatic power of the wines produced here. Abbona chose the name Cinerino ("grey like ash") for this 100% Viognier because of the flock of grey herons that periodically peeped in the quoted vineyard (not surprisingly called "Airone", which means in Italian "Heron"). The lovers of the freshness and the minerality of great white nordic wines will fall in love with this Viognier, going through a thorough aging in wood for a precise choice of the company, to donate softness and smoothness.
